Established in 1851 from Crawford, Polk, and Scott Counties, Sebastian County is located on the western edge of the state, bordering Oklahoma, in the Arkansas River Valley, and is considered part of the Fort Smith, Arkansas-Oklahoma Statistical Area. The area includes forested ridges, rolling farmlands, mountains, and lakes. With an area of only 546 square miles, Sebastian is the smallest of Arkansas's counties, though it has two county seats, Fort Smith and Greenwood. Major communities in Sebastian County are Bonanza, Hackett, Hartford, Huntington, Jenny Lind, Lavaca, Mansfield, Washburn, and Witcherville.
